  • They are in lobar, cortical, and subcortical areas
  • They are < 5mm in size
  • Their number correlates with bleeding risk and cognition
  • They are hypointense on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • They are best seen on gradient echo sequences
  • They are found in 3–5% of normal people
