Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) features

  • Protein: this is raised in a half of cases
  • White cell count: there is Monocytic pleocytosis in >40% of cases
  • Glucose: this is low in 20% of cases
  • Oligoclonal bands (OCBs): these are present in 30% of cases
  • Soluble interleukin 2 receptor (sIL-2R): levels are raised
  • CD4:CD8 ratio: this is ≥ 5
  • The CSF is normal in a third of cases
